Matters Arising As Validation for the Month Drops

Pre-Tertiary teacher unions in Ghana declared an indefinite strike action On July 4, 2022 with immediate effect   following the government’s failure to pay them a 20% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) they asked for.

The Government, Teacher Unions and other stake holders after several meetings to negotiate on the fate of the ‘COLA’, agreed to pay teachers and other public sector workers 15% of their base pay as the Cost Of Living Allowance.

The parties involved therefore signed an MoU indicating that the payment of the COLA was going to be paid effective July 1, 2022.

A communique which circulated in the later part of the month (July) indicated that, the payment was not going to be made since the validation procedures had already been made hence, it will be disbursed together with August’s Salary (not excluding that of July.

On Wednesday, July 17, 2022, the General Secretary for Ghana National Association of Teachers GNAT, in a message that was sent to its members  bespeak that the ‘COLA’ which was to be paid effective July 1, was going to take effect in August.

This message from the secretary of the said Teacher Union did not go down well with teachers nationwide as to why an MoU can easily be changed.

After the validation (Payment Voucher) was opened for the month of August, the messages from the Secretary and other sources seem not to be true as the payments are done in accordance to what the parties involved in the negotiation agreed on.

The COLA, has however being paid effective July 1, 2022.
