The Science, Technology, Mathematics, and Innovation Education (STMIE) Camp of 2023, which concluded on Friday, 24th February at Mfantsiman Girls SHS in the Central Region, saw Kpando SHS crowned as the best school out of the 245 participating SHS schools. The 5-day event involved project-based learning activities for students in different classes, covering subjects such as Physics, Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, and Computing. Students were tested on the concepts they had learned during the Camp.
The Deputy Director-General of GES in charge of Management Services, Mr. Stephen Kwaku Owusu, who represented the Director-General, Dr. Eric Nkansah as the chairman for the function, expressed gratitude to the students and teachers for their impressive display of creative works on STEM/STEAM. The Director for the Science Education Unit at GES (National STEM Resource Centre), Mrs. Olivia Serwaa Opare, stated that the Camp's purpose was to provide students with hands-on activities in STEM/STEAM, which is the best way to impart concepts taught in the classroom permanently.
Other speakers at the event, including the Special Advisor to the Honourable Minister for Education on STEM policy, Prof. Adom Asamoah, who represented the Minister, and the guest speaker, Prof. (Mrs.) Mercy Denkyi, emphasized the importance of prioritizing STEM education in the country. Awards were given to students who excelled during the Camp.
Kpando SHS, the overall best school, was awarded a projector to improve digital learning in the school. Stephen Agbofah from Kpando SHS in the Volta region was crowned the overall best student in the Camp and received a laptop from the Director-General of GES. Worawora SHS in the Oti region emerged as the best project school at the Camp.
Sulemana Madihatu and Mawunyega Elikem from Ghana SHS, Tamale, and Holly Child School, Cape Coast, were the 1st and 2nd runners-up from the top 3 award category, respectively, after Stephen Agbofah from Kpando SHS won. They all received a medal, trophy, and certificate. Sulemana Madihatu from Ghana SHS, Tamale, received a trophy as the best girl student in the Camp. The GES has reaffirmed its commitment to using STEM/STEAM to advance the country's development.
