National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) Demands Urgent Release of Delayed Student Loans

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has expressed its disappointment with the delay in the release of student loans to awaiting students and has called on the government and the Students' Loan Trust Fund to urgently address the issue. According to NUGS, the delay in the disbursement of funds is causing significant problems for students who depend on the loan to pay for their education.

In a joint statement signed by NUGS President, Dennis Appiah Ampofo-Larbi, the student body revealed that it has received numerous complaints from students across the country regarding the non-payment of student loans, despite the long period after the application. The statement noted that the delay has affected about 70,000 students who are at risk of missing registration deadlines and mid-semester exams.

NUGS cited examples of institutions such as the University of Business and Integrated Development (UBIDS-WA), which have issued warnings to students about closing registration deadlines. The situation is expected to worsen, as KNUST is set to write mid-semester exams from February 27th, 2023, which would be impossible for many students to attend due to their inability to pay fees resulting from the non-payment of student loans.

The statement called on the government to fulfill its obligation to these frustrated and desperate students by paying the qualified applicants of the student loan immediately. NUGS assured students that it would take appropriate measures to assist them and urged them to remain calm.

In conclusion, NUGS has urged the government and the Students' Loan Trust Fund to expedite the release of the student loans to enable students to pay their fees and concentrate on their studies. The student body also hopes that the government will take steps to ensure that such delays do not recur in the future, as it affects the academic progress of students and the development of the country as a whole.
