The Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery (MP), has issued a press release notifying the general public of an additional public holiday in Ghana. The press release states that Saturday, 22nd April, 2023 marks Eid-ul-Fitr, a statutory public holiday. However, since the holiday falls on a Saturday, the President of the Republic of Ghana has declared Monday, 24th April, 2023 as an additional public holiday.
The declaration of Monday, 24th April, 2023 as a public holiday is in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, (Act 601). The Act empowers the President to declare additional public holidays when a public holiday falls on a weekend or a non-working day. This ensures that the public holiday is not forfeited and workers can have time to celebrate and relax.
The announcement of the additional public holiday has been well received by Ghanaians. Many people are excited about the opportunity to spend time with their families and friends, and to celebrate the end of Ramadan. Eid-ul-Fitr is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims all over the world. It marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting, prayer, and reflection.
