GES Responds to Outrage as Ghana Senior High School Students Forced to Sleep in Toilet Cubicles

Ghana Senior High School in Tamale is in the news for the wrong reasons. In a viral video being circulated on social media, some students of the school were seen using toilet cubicles as dormitories. The disturbing footage has sparked outrage among Ghanaians, who have expressed their concern over the welfare of the students.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has responded to the issue by directing the Headmaster and Senior Housemaster to step aside to allow for further investigations by the Regional Director of Education. The GES has also assured stakeholders and the general public that it will continue to ensure that students in its care operate in a safe school environment.

This incident is unfortunate and unacceptable, especially given that the school reportedly has excess capacity to house 300 extra students. It is unacceptable that students are made to sleep in such deplorable conditions, and action must be taken to address the situation.

It is important to note that this incident is not isolated. Overcrowding in schools and the lack of adequate accommodation for students have been long-standing issues in Ghana's education sector. This has often resulted in students sleeping in unacceptable conditions, which is not only a violation of their rights but also a threat to their health and well-being.

The government and stakeholders in the education sector must take immediate action to address this issue. There is a need for more investment in the education sector to improve infrastructure and ensure that schools have the necessary resources to cater to the needs of students adequately.

In addition, there is a need for better regulation and monitoring of schools to ensure that they comply with standards set by the GES. This will help to prevent incidents like the one that occurred at Ghana Senior High School in Tamale from happening in the future.

The use of toilet cubicles as dormitories for students is a clear indication of the state of education infrastructure in Ghana. It is unacceptable and must be addressed urgently. The government, the Ghana Education Service, and all stakeholders in the education sector must work together to ensure that Ghanaian students are provided with a safe and conducive learning environment.
