Asunafo South District Director's Familiarization with Teachers Spurs Interventions to Enhance Teaching Methodologies and Student Performance
On April 21st, 2023, the District Director of Education in the Asunafo South district of the Ahafo region, Mrs. Naana Forson, met with all teachers in the Sankore North and South circuits. Mrs. Forson, who was transferred from a district in the Greater Accra region, addressed the teachers on the challenges facing the district.
During her address, Mrs. Forson spoke of her visits to some schools in the district, where she noticed challenges in English reading on the part of learners and pedagogy or teaching methodologies on the part of facilitators. She also addressed the issue of examination malpractices during the writing of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
She further addressed the issue of absenteeism of students as they reach their final year and also collection of monies from candidates with the aim of writing exams for them. She stated that she will not tolerate such acts, and teachers or head teachers who are caught in the act will not be let off lightly.
To address the English problem on the part of teachers in the district, Mrs. Forson has created a WhatsApp platform to train teachers and curb the issue at hand. She instructed all teachers to embark on early morning reading to help learners improve their reading abilities.
During the meeting, forum was opened for teachers to bring out their concerns, suggestions, contributions, and other issues, there were controversies surrounding the expectations from parents for good results from their children. One suggestion was that all the work should not be placed on teachers because parents are responsible for ensuring that their children do assignments given after school.
Another concern raised was the abolishment of caning of students, which some teachers claimed to be a contributing factor to poor performance. However, Mrs. Forson responded that this was the government’s intervention, and it has come to stay, and nothing can be done about it.
In attendance at the meeting were Mr. Yeboah Paul (Circuit Supervisor, Sankore South), the Acting PRO of the Asunafo South District, the district cultural coordinator, and a few others. Sankore North and South were the circuits she met, as she has already met with those in the other circuits in the district. This is her first move in the district.
Mrs. Faustina Forson has started well by familiarizing herself with all teachers in her district and Spurs Interventions to Enhance Teaching Methodologies and Student Performance.
Mama, welcome to Asunafo South District
