Organized Labour Declares Strike on Monday, July 10 in Response to Union Leaders' Dismissal

In a significant development, Organised Labour has announced a strike scheduled for Monday, July 10, stemming from the dismissal of three union leaders by the management of Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited. The ongoing dispute revolves around the employees' right to unionize and addresses alleged mistreatment and abuses of other union members, primarily perpetrated by the predominantly Chinese management.

For several months, Organised Labour has persistently called for the reinstatement of the three dismissed union leaders, yet their efforts have thus far proven futile. Despite the involvement of the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, no resolution has been reached. Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, Secretary General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress and spokesperson for Organised Labour, emphasized that even the President of Ghana cannot impede the fundamental right of workers to join a trade union during a press conference held in March.


Strike Notice and Action:

To address the continued disregard for workers' rights, Dr. Yaw Baah issued a directive on Monday, June 26, urging public sector employees to refrain from reporting to work on Monday, July 10. This initial step serves as a means to exert pressure on the management of Sunon-Asogli and call for appropriate action.
