Government Expands Ghana School Feeding Programme: 2,446 New Schools Added and Increased Benefits

In a significant stride towards enhancing the Ghana School Feeding Programme, the government has made noteworthy progress by adding a total of 2,446 new public schools since 2016. This commendable effort has resulted in an expansion of beneficiaries, rising from 1,671,777 in 8,326 public basic schools in 2016 to an impressive 3,801,491 beneficiaries now enrolled in 10,832 public basic schools, as of the year 2023.

To further improve the effectiveness of the program, the government has decided to increase the cost per meal, per child, per day from GH¢1.00 to GH¢1.20 for the 2023 academic year. This strategic move aims to ensure that the nutritional needs of the students are met adequately, fostering their overall growth and development.

The positive impact of these developments was revealed by the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, during his mid-year budget review presentation at the Parliament on Monday, July 31, 2023. In his address, the Minister emphasized the government's dedication to the welfare of the students and the program's beneficiaries.

Furthermore, the Minister proudly announced that the government has successfully settled all outstanding arrears owed to caterers under the programme. This settlement includes arrears for the 2nd and 3rd terms of the 2022 academic year and the 1st term of 2023. The fulfillment of these financial obligations showcases the government's commitment to ensuring the smooth functioning of the Ghana School Feeding Programme and supporting the caterers who play a vital role in its implementation.

The Ghana School Feeding Programme has been instrumental in enhancing the well-being and educational experience of countless students across the country. By providing nutritious meals to children in schools, the program not only improves their health but also serves as an incentive for regular attendance, academic engagement, and overall performance.

As the government continues to invest in the growth and expansion of this vital program, it reflects its dedication to promoting a better future for the nation's youth. The impact of the Ghana School Feeding Programme goes beyond the provision of meals; it fosters a nurturing environment that empowers students to thrive academically and contribute positively to society.

Through these recent developments and ongoing support, the government reiterates its commitment to the well-being of Ghana's young learners, ensuring that no child is left behind in accessing quality education and nutritious meals. As the Ghana School Feeding Programme continues to evolve, it stands as a testament to the government's determination to build a brighter and healthier future for the nation.
