Teacher Unions in Ghana have declared indefinite strike action following the Organized Labours’ press statement on Proposed sale of 60% of SSNIT’s shares in the four hotels which took place on the 25th day of June 2024 at the Jubilee House.
The Organised Labour finds it difficult to apprehend with the fact that the NPRA had approved the negotiation with Rock city hotel Ltd regardless of their opposition towards this initiative during their previous meeting on 28 June, 2024.
The Organised Labour on this note has reiterated its known position that the proposed sale of the SSNIT’s shares in the four hotels to the Rock city is not in the best interests of Ghanaian workers and for that matter the management of SSNIT should terminate the process immediately.
This has therefore compelled the leadership of the Teacher Unions to declare that its members must stay off work starting from 15th July, 2024.
TEACHER UNIONS
PRESS RELEASE INDUSTRIAL ACTION (STRIKE)
The Leadership of the Pre-Tertiary Unions under the Ministry of Education, call on all Teachers and non Teaching Staff to heed the call of Organised Labour by laying down their working tools and stay off work beginning 15th July, 2024.
This strike has become necessary due to the fact that Government intends to go ahead with the sale of SSNIT properties to Rock City despite the call by Organise Labour for a halt to the sales.
Attached is the Organised Labour statement.”
“ORGANISED LABOUR
PRESS STATEMENT ON PROPOSED SALE OF 60% OF SSNIT'S SHARES IN THE FOUR HOTELS
We have followed the developments on the proposed sale of 60% of SSNIT's stake in four hotels with very keen interest, especially after Organised Labour leadership meeting with the President of the Republic on this matter which took place on 25th June, 2024 at the Jubilee House.
Yesterday, 11th July, 2024, the Honourable Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, who is also responsible for pensions, made a statement in Parliament that NPRA has approved the sale of 60% of SSNIT's shares in the hotels.
We recall that on 28th June, 2024 the Board of NPRA issued a directive to SSNIT to
suspend the negotiation with Rock City Hotel Ltd. We, therefore, find it extremely difficult to understand how and why NPRA would turn around to approve such a flawed deal two weeks after the directive.
Organised Labour would like to reiterate its well-known position that the proposed sale of SSNIT's shares in the four hotels is not in the best interest of Ghanaian workers.
We, therefore, demand that SSNIT terminates the process immediately.
From Monday, 15th July, 2024 all workers in Ghana must not go to work until SSNIT publicly announces the termination of the process for the sale of its shares in the hotels”
