Organised Labour Declares Nationwide Strike Over Illegal Mining Concerns
October 1, 2024
In a significant development for workers
across the nation, Organised Labour convened an emergency meeting today to
address the government's inaction regarding critical demands related to illegal
mining, commonly referred to as "galamsey." After extensive deliberation
and the expiration of the previously set deadline, the body has announced a
nationwide strike set to commence on October 10, 2024.
In a statement following the meeting, highlighting
the urgency of the situation. “The failure of the government to address our
concerns about the rampant illegal mining activities that threaten our
environment and livelihoods has left us with no choice,” Ansah stated. “We are
calling on all workers to stay at home starting Thursday, October 10, 2024,
until the government accedes to our demands.”
The decision to strike stems from
widespread frustration over the government's inability to curb illegal mining
practices that not only jeopardize natural resources but also endanger the
health and safety of local communities. Organised Labour argues that these
activities have far-reaching implications for the economy and the environment,
impacting everything from agricultural productivity to water quality.
As the strike date approaches, Organised
Labour is mobilizing its members and the broader public to raise awareness
about the critical issues surrounding illegal mining. The call to action
underscores the unity and determination of workers to advocate for sustainable
practices and responsible governance.
The impending strike represents a pivotal
moment in the ongoing discourse about environmental stewardship and workers'
rights. Organised Labour is urging solidarity among all sectors, emphasizing
that the fight against illegal mining is not just a labour issue but a
collective national concern.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on the government’s response in the coming days. Will they take the necessary steps to address the demands of Organised Labour, or will the strike proceed as planned? The answer could have significant implications for workers, communities, and the environment alike.
